As an artist and graphic designer, Jim Harper works in a variety of media. His work includes both functional and non-functional pieces in both two- and three-dimensions. Two-dimensional work includes painting, drawing, and photography--as well as Jim's graphic design work. When creating three-dimensional sculpture and functional art pieces, Jim works primarily metal, wood, glass, and stone.
Jim has a BFA in Visual Arts: Metalwork and Jewelry from Northern Illinois University, and a MA in Sculpture from Governors State University (IL). He also has done several years of post-graduate study in the field of Education at Cornell University, and has an Associates degree in computer science.
In addition to being a practicing artist for many years, Jim has worked in the advertising, publishing, and information technologies fields.
He started Jim Harper Designs in 1980. Besides the fine art produced, the firm has served as a graphic design and marketing services resource for clients in New York State and beyond.
Born and raised in the Chicago area, Jim moved to Ithaca, New York in 1978. He has three children.
